Nonprofit deconstruction service expands into for-profit company

A nonprofit deconstruction and restore program in Missoula, Montana, is expanding into a for-profit company called Montana Deconstruction Services (MDS), a report by the Missoulian says. The company is part of a city council-approved resolution to reduce Missoula’s waste by 90 percent by 2050.

Home ReSource, the nonprofit organization, provides deconstruction services and sells lumber, fixtures and other construction and demolition (C&D) materials to the public. The organization diverted 900 tons of material from landfill in 2016, the report says.

Jason Nuckolls, owner of MDS, says the nonprofit had such a high demand that it began to thrive on its own without nonprofit status. MDS will still donate the materials it salvages to Home ReSource.

According Nuckolls, MDS keeps materials it can salvage usable during the deconstruction process, which take a little longer than a normal demolition. A popular area for Nuckolls’ services is the University District, which holds older houses.

The report says Missoula is experiencing a housing crunch, where there is large demand for housing with little supplies, causing residents to consider new uses for old buildings.
