New York Using RAP to Fill Potholes

The office of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the New York Department of Transportation (DOT) have announced that the city’s winter pothole filling season is in full swing.

In the last five weeks, DOT crews have filled more than 20,000 potholes across the city, with more than 80,000 filled in the last six months.

New York is using recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in its pothole repair, which is a 40 percent recycled asphalt product. It is produced at the DOT’s asphalt plant in Brooklyn.

By using this material, 174,000 tons of paving material was diverted from landfills in one year, according to a press release from the mayor’s office.
