Legislation that would have allowed for the closing of the Chef Menteur Landfill in New Orleans has failed in a state House committee, according to a report in the Times-Picayune (New Orleans).
The legislation would have allowed the construction and demolition debris landfill to close if sufficient capacity for hurricane debris could be found at other locations, according to the report. The site was opened in April and concerns over its safety have been raised by some residents because of its proximity to the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge.
