New Mexico County to Reopen Landfill

Site will accept C&D debris, residential and commercial solid waste.

Officials in Valencia County, N.M., have announced plans to reopen the Valencia County Regional Landfill, near Los Lunas, N.M., according to a report in the News-Bulletin (Belen, N.M.).

The facility will accept construction and demolition debris as well as residential and commercial solid waste, according to the report.

The 640-acre site was opened originally in 1988, operated by Waste Management along with another site at Rio Rancho. The Valencia County site was closed a decade later when Waste Management determined it was financially unsound to operate both facilities, according to the report.

After its closure, most of the county’s trash was sent to Rio Rancho, which now only has five to 12 years of life left.

Once the Valencia County facility is reopened, it will accept 165 tons of material per day, according to the report.

The anticipated life expectancy for the site is 75 years.

Waste Management must receive a solid waste facility permit from the New Mexico Environment Department before reopening the site. A public hearing on the matter will be held on Jan. 31.
