New Hampshire plant proposal causes stir among residents

Galloway Trucking submitted a proposal for three acres of land to be used as an asphalt milling and concrete recycling operation.

Galloway Trucking, Plaistow, New Hampshire, has proposed using three acres of land for an asphalt milling and concrete recycling operation in Fremont, New Hampshire, a report from the Union Leader says. The land is located along Shirkin Road for the operation, and has created concern among Fremont residents.

The proposal will be discussed at a planning board meeting June 1. The company is already permitted to excavate on the property, but it is not a daily operation, according to the report. The proposal also outlines Galloway’s need for machinery and other equipment, as well as an office trailer to be placed on the property.

Resident Renee King told the Union Leader she has several serious concerns about the plan, including potential environmental impact because of its close proximity to wetlands and groundwater contamination, an increase in truck traffic on narrow Shirkin Road and nearby roads, and noise from the operation.

In a letter to the planning board, Galloway’s engineer, Dennis Quintal of Civil Construction Management Inc., Newton New Hampshire, noted that the proposal calls for 40 vehicle trips per day. During a 10-hour day, there would be an average of four trips per hour, the Union Leader says.
