ABC and CFMA Economist to Give Keynote at NDA Convention in March

A leading construction industry economist, Dr. Anirban Basu, will be the keynote speaker at the National Demolition Association’s (NDA) 39th Annual Convention in San Antonio, March 10-13. His address, entitled “Understanding the Construction Economy: Your 19th Nervous Breakdown,” is sure to generate a good deal of discussion and interest, says Michael R. Taylor, CAE, NDA executive director.

“With Dr. Basu’s background as the chief economist for the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and economic consultant to the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), he has a depth of understanding of the demolition industry that few others have,” Taylor says.

This year’s event at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center is the first time that NDA’s convention will be held in Texas. “Our San Antonio-based convention committee chairman promises to deliver a true Texas experience to attendees, with a cowboy dance hall themed party, a professional bull riders’ rodeo, a big Texas barbeque, and a Mexican fiesta,” according to Taylor.

Early bird attendees can register for the NDA’s 25th Annual Golf Tournament March 10. On March 11, the Grand Hyatt San Antonio is the setting for the Opening Night Cocktail Reception.
 
On March 12, following Dr. Basu’s address, George Hedley, CSP, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and best-selling author, will give advice on the topic “Get Your Business to Grow and Profit in a Tough Economy.” In addition, the exhibit hall opens in the afternoon.

On March 13, the first breakout sessions is “Ferrari Hydraulic Demolition Method,” a demonstration on the hydraulic jack method of demolition by Daniel Rieber of Ferrari Demolition Ltd. Next is “Values in Scrap,” a look at the scrap market, presented by Drew Lammers of Cohen Brothers Inc. and Jim Lawrence of ISA Alloys. The third session is titled “Are Your Insurance Claims Helping You Manage Your Risks?” a presentation on managing claims and overall risk by Mitch Nelson of Fireman’s Fund.
