Nationals Park Goes Green

Home of the Washington Nationals earns Silver level LEED certification.

Nationals Park, home of the major league baseball team the Washington Nationals of Washington D.C., has earned Silver level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The ballpark received 34 points toward LEED certification for green design elements, including:

  • Using recycled materials in 20 percent of the ballpark’s construction and recycling 5,500 tons of construction debris.
  • Placing 100 recycling bins for fan use throughout the ballpark.
  • Using air-cooled chillers instead of water-cooled chillers to save 6 million gallons of water per year.
  • Using high efficiency field lighting, which will save 21 percent over typical field lighting.

HOK Sport was the design firm for the project. More information is available online at www.hoksport.com.
