National Gypsum Planning NC Wallboard Plant

Company will be working with power plant on project.

National Gypsum Co. announced plans to build a high speed wallboard plant in the Charlotte, NC, region. The plant would recycle rather than landfill byproduct gypsum generated from sulfur dioxide scrubber projects at Duke Power coal-fired plants. The company has signed an agreement with Duke Power to develop the project.

"We are considering sites for the plant in both North and South Carolina that are within close proximity to the Duke operations," said Thomas C. Nelson, president and CEO. "We anticipate the plant will begin production in 2007 and will supply wallboard to our growing Southeast market.
