Onslow County (North Carolina) officials have to choose between building a new construction and demolition debris landfill and permitting private companies to build one, according to a report in the New Bern Sun Journal (New Bern, N.C.).
The Raleigh, N.C.-based consulting firm Camp Dresser & McKee made the recommendation to the county commissioners by presentation of an updated version of a C&D material diversion study designed to assess the economic impact of giving some landfill business to a private company, according to the report.
The Sun Journal reports that Jacksonville, N.C.-based Morton Trucking Co. wants to create a C&D landfill on a 100-acre site on the eastern side of the county.
According to the consultants’ findings, the county’s current county landfill will reach capacity in 15 years if material is not diverted elsewhere. The consultants say the county’s decision comes down to whether or not they intend to replace the current landfill once it hits capacity, according to the report.
