MSS Releases New Optical Sorter

MSS Inc. , Nashville, Tenn., a manufacturer of optical sorting equipment, has introduced the Cirrus^TM high-resolution near-infrared (NIR), color and metal sorting system for a range of recycling facility applications.

The Cirrus is MSS’ latest generation of NIR, color and metal sensor technology. According to MSS, it provides automated separation opportunities from single stream to construction and demolition MRFs as well as plastics, paper and electronic scrap recycling facilities.

“The Cirrus provides outstanding sensor resolution and identification performance”, says Greg Thibado, MSS general manager, “We will be able to apply it to new sorting applications where optical sorting has not yet been used.”

The company says the Cirrus accurately sorts targeted commodities using advanced identification algorithms and corresponding precise high-pressure air jets. It can be easily configured by the operator via a touch-screen interface and is offered in various sizes between 1,200 millimeters (48 inches) and 2,400 millimeters (96 inches).

“The Cirrus allows us, being at the forefront of industry trends, to sort smaller particles,” says Felix Hottenstein, MSS sales director. “This exciting new technology will be able to do things that were not possible before.”

The exact sensor configuration is tailored to the specific processing application. For example, an all-metal detector for ferrous, nonferrous and stainless steel can be added, as well as for wood, for further sorting applications. The Cirrus will be offered in conveyor and slide configuration.
