Montreal Recycler Targets Mattresses

Entrepreneur harvests metal, wood and polyurethane foam.

MattCanada, a Montreal-based mattress recycling company started by Abdul Erdem, is now serving more than 30 clients, including retail chains, manufacturers, hotels, municipalities and hospitals.

Erdem started just a few years ago operating in a small warehouse with only two local furniture retailers as customers. According to Erdem, inquiries now come from many types of companies wishing to dispose of mattresses and other items.

MattCanada has now expanded its services by accepting a larger variety of items as well as opening new locations. Currently, on top of recycling mattresses and box springs, MattCanada recycles clothing, toys, home appliances and electronics.

The company has plans to soon offer service in New Jersey, and “other locations are being considered too, both in United States and in Canada,” according to Erdem.

The entrepreneur says he has also been asked by foreign governments to help them with their mattress disposal and recycling problems.

The processing of mattresses for recycling has traditionally been a problem, according to Erdem. He cites reasons such as they are “bulky and hard to move, even with heavy machinery. Springs or coils can jam a machine. Removing a trapped mattress from a large machine has to be done manually and is very dangerous. Older or torn mattresses in dry conditions are a fire hazard.”

Erdem appeals to generators of waste mattresses to recycle them to reduce their landfill costs and to help re-introduce the recyclable materials into the market. “Every company has its bottom line and this is ours: MattCanada would like to see everyone and every company to be a recycler rather than a polluter,” says Erdem.
