Mobile, Ala., Courthouse Slated for Demolition

Virginia Wrecking Co. wins bid.

Virginia Wrecking Co. of Stapleton, Ala., has been awarded a $1.3 million contract by the Mobile (Alabama) County Commission to tear down the old county courthouse, according to a report in the Mobile Register (Mobile, Ala.).

According to the report, asbestos removal from the more-than-50-year-old structure will begin in early August. Demolition will follow once the asbestos is removed, county spokeswoman Barbara Drummond tells the Register.

According to the report, the county plans to replace the former county seat with a Mardi Gras-themed park.
