North Carolina county applies for demolition grants

The grants will help demolish two sites for redevelopment.

Mitchell County, North Carolina, Board of Commissioners plan to apply for grant funding for two demolition projects, a report by the Mitchell News-Journal says. The projects are related to economic development.

If the application is accepted, the funding will come from the North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority, the report says. The projects are a 230,000-square-foot concrete pad and a vacant building known as the Phillips building. According to the report, two grants can be awarded—up to $75,000 for buildings under 100,000 square feet, such as the Phillips building, and up to $150,000 for buildings more than 100,000 square feet.

The grants require a 25 percent match from the county, the report says. As a stipulation, sites cannot be used for public facilities, such as parking lots, parks or recreational facilities.

The Phillips building is a former T-shirt factory, is located on 4.2 acres of land with an assessed value of $111,000, the report says. The concrete pad sits on 14 acres of land that is valued at $241,300.

Recipients of the grants will be announced on Dec. 15.
