A pilot program for recycling asphalt roofing shingles in Columbia, Mo., has been approved by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, according to a report in the Missourian (Columbia, Mo.).
The city’s landfill has received nearly 125 tons of recyclable shingles, according to the report. However, the Public Works Department is still considering bidding companies to do the recycling.
According to the report, the department hopes to arrive at a decision this week.
A spokeswoman for the city says that the shingles were generated due to heavy storms that damaged a number of buildings in the area.
It is expected that the project will take up less than six months, although, depending on the success of the project, the city may look to continue the project.
The Request for Proposal also requires the winning bid to cover any additional grinding permitting requirements with the Departemnt of Natural Resources, Air, Water Pollution Control and Solid Waste Programs.
Cynthia Mitchell, Landfill & Recovery supervisor, said that city received bids from three different companies.
