Miller Waste Installs SSI Shredder

SSI Model M100 Dual-Shear shredder is selected for Ontario, Canada, composting facility.

SSI Shredding Systems of Wilsonville, Ore., has announced that The Miller Group, Ontario Canada, has selected SSI to provide a low-speed/high torque shredder for their Pickering, Ontario, in-vessel composting facility.

The SSI Model M100 Dual-ShearTM shredder is processing household organic waste at rates of 20-30 tons per hour. According to a spokesman Mike Kopansky at Miller Waste, the single-step shredding operation reduces the material down to sizes similar to what a tub grinder would produce with a 2-inch screen.

The unique aspect of the SSI M100 shredder is that it is reliable low-speed technology and no integral screen is required. This results in high processing rates and minimal maintenance, according to the manufacturer. SSI engineered a special cutter configuration designed to achieve the highest processing rate and the smallest particle size in a one-step “no screen” operation.

The Miller Group selected SSI and the M100 Dual-Shear shredder based on prior successful experience with SSI at another Miller Group Composting facility, which installed the prior generation SSI Dual-Shear shredder eight years ago.

The SSI M100E cutters are 20 inches in diameter and weigh 80 pounds each. A series of cutters on dual, 52-inch long shafts rotate at a low speed of 21 rpm. The driveline incorporates a patented clutch to protect the system from damage due to non-shreddables. The system has a 12-step labyrinth seal protection system at each end of the cutting chamber designed to protect the bearings in the composting environment.
