A Grand Rapids, Mich.-company has plans to combine glass recycling and concrete block production, according to a report in the Business Review of Western Michigan (Grand Rapids, Mich.)
EPI Concrete Products uses pulverized glass in place of sand in its mix for concrete blocks. According to the report, 80 percent of the company’s block content is recycled material, which helps contractors who use it earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building credits.
When a Holland, Mich., company renovated its corporate headquarters, it gave more than nine tons of tempered glass windows to EPI. That material, along with more than 70 tons of recycled glass and aggregates went into the production of new concrete blocks, according to the report.
Polar Seal Window Corp. in Grand Rapids, Magna Donnelly in Holland and Wolverine Glass Products Inc. in Grandville are among the companies that send scrap recycled glass to EPI, according to the report.
