Michigan Company Eyes Brownfield Site for Concrete Recycling

Traverse City, Mich., company has purchased portion of former Gaylord, Mich., landfill for proposed facility.

Elmer’s Crane and Dozer of Traverse City, Mich., has purchased a portion of the former landfill in Gaylord, Mich., for a proposed concrete recycling facility, according to a report in the Gaylord Herald Times (Gaylord, Mich.).

The site has been identified as a brownfield since it was a former landfill. The Otsego County Board of Commissioners has approved a resolution allowing the Otsego county Brownfield Redevelopment Authority to receive a $492,550 Department of Environmental Quality Clean Michigan Initiative Brownfield Redevelopment loan to cover the costs of environmental assessment and contaminant mitigation of the property.

According to the report, the site has not been used as a landfill for at least 40 years.

Plans for the site include one building and a parking lot at the southern edge of the site, with a majority of the property reserved for aggregate storage and concrete recycling.

The project is expected to create 10 permanent jobs and 20 construction jobs.
