McCloskey Introduces Track ‘N’ Tow Trommel

Company introduces portable trommel.

McCloskey International, Peterborough, Ontario, has introduced a mobile version of its high-production trommel that provides high-speed towing portability plus self-transport on a crawler mount.

The new “track ‘n’ tow” version of the McCloskey 621 portable trommel is equipped with a tracked crawler undercarriage for self-transport. The undercarriage can also be retracted for long-distance towing on its conventional wheeled running gear, according to the company.

"This design is a direct response to customer requests," Paschal McCloskey, president of McCloskey International, says. "We had just released a series of engineering enhancements to our 621 trommel and we were demonstrating the improvements to a customer. At the end, our customer was sold on its screening capacity but he wanted the same mobility as our smaller track-mounted models. So we built it!"

McCloskey designed a remote-operated heavy-duty crawler undercarriage with a hydraulically driven mounting system. The hydraulic cylinders provide an 18-inch travel range, so the crawler base can retract above the wheeled running gear. When the crawler undercarriage is lowered, the wheels are elevated high enough to provide enough ground clearance to operate on typical off-road job site conditions, according to the company.

The “track ‘n’ tow” crawler base is similar to the basic design of previous mobile units from McCloskey, including a unique flush-mounted protective skirt that keeps stones and loose material clear of the tracks to prevent clogging or jamming.

The unit is equipped with a "quick change" 6-foot-by-21-foot drum, based on McCloskey's patented Drum X-Change System. The new models feature a large 6.5-yard hopper with extra-wide 42-inch direct-drive feed conveyors designed to prevent bridging. McCloskey has also widened the 180-degree radial stacker to 42 inches. Other changes include a larger drum drive, high-density drive wheels and new high-torque, high-flow hydraulics.
