MassDevelopment, the finance and development agency for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, sold two parcels of land, including one that will be used to open and operate a construction and demolition recycling facility.
Devens Recycling Center LLC, through its two partners Kurt Macnamara and James Benson, purchased an 11-acre plot, and are looking to build a 90,000-square-foot C&D recycling facility.
DRC's solid waste recycling facility can process 1,500 tons of brick, concrete, steel, wood, asphalt, carpet and gypsum each day. The majority of these materials will be returned to market as recycled products including wood fuel, asphalt and pot-hole patch. It is expected that the facility will play a role in helping Massachusetts developers meet the state Department of Environmental Protection's regulations prohibiting the disposal of these materials in state landfills. This project will result in the creation of 50 jobs with the possible addition of more positions once a maintenance shift is established.
"When finished, our new facility will be a model for solid waste recycling plants nationwide, and we're very pleased to be doing business in Devens," said Kurt Macnamara, principal of Devens Recycling Center, LLC. "Thanks to MassDevelopment and the Devens Enterprise Commission for working with us to help make this project a reality in a thorough and expeditious manner."
The lot already has its permits in place. The company is now working on the financing, which it hopes to have complete by the middle of this summer. The groundbreaking on the project also is slated to take place this summer.
The location was part of the Fort Dever military base, which was closed about 15 years ago. Since then the state has been looking to find new uses for the closed base.
