Massachusetts Sues Landfill Over H2S

State seeks court order to require pretreatment controls.

The state of Massachusetts is seeking a court order to force the operators of a Newburyport, Mass., landfill to stop the spread of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas emissions and to require the landfill operator to install pretreatment controls to stop the spread of the gas.

According to the state’s attorney general’s office, residents and individuals near the landfill have made repeated complaints about the strong rotten egg odors. Many who reported the odor complained of eye and throat irritation, nausea and headaches, according to the complaint.

The complaint also alleges that New Ventures Associates LLC, which operates the landfill facility, did not assure the facility’s current gas treatment system was operating at all times and that if failed to apply or maintain an adequate temporary cover over open portions of the landfill, which is currently in the process of being closed and capped.
