Mass. Town Fined For Landfill Offenses

Middleborough faces $191,000 fine for 15 violations.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued a $191,000 fine against the town of Middleborough, Mass., for 15 violations reportedly discovered after a recent inspection of the Brook Street landfill, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

According to the report, alleged violations include filling the 80-acre landfill beyond capacity, failure to address odor problems and inadequate grading and storm water management.

However, the Boston Globe reports that Town Manager John Healey says some of the state findings are inaccurate and he wants the fines reduced.

For instance, Healey tells the Globe that construction and demolition debris being used as daily cover had been replaced because it was causing odors.

According to the report, the state and the town are still negotiating the order.
