Maryland Wood Recycler Seeks Exception to Continue Operations

Deal arranged between wood recycler, community group prior to hearing.

The Anne Arundel County, MD, County Council heard testimony from a company that is seeking to continue operating in the city.

A-A Recycle & Sand, which operates a wood waste recycling facility in Pasadena, MD, appeared before the Anne Arundel County Council to request a special exception to continue operating. The company has been operating at the site for a number of years. However, the county has rezoned the land on which the company operates. The result is the company has to apply for an exception to continue operating.

The company made its request at the County Council meeting Jan. 17th.Prior to the hearing the company had signed a covenant with Lake Waterford Community Association Inc., a group of households near the wood recycling plant.

As part of the discussion the two sides came up with a number of changes to the business, including shortening the hours of operation and requiring more landscaping to be put in place that would reduce the visibility of the plant, as well as cut down on the noise at the plant.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the land where the company operates was rezoned as an industrial section, resulting in the company having to apply for the exception.

In addition to shortening the hours of operation and installing more landscaping, the Sun reports that the company and the community in which it is located, will meet four times a year to work out any problems between the two sides.

If these steps were accepted the residents of the Lake Waterford Community Association would not contest A-A’s request for a zoning exception.
