Maryland County Council Refuses C&D Landfill Plan

Harford County officials reject plan to reopen Abingdon landfill.

The Harford County, Md., Council has rejected plans to reopen an old sand and gravel pit near Abingdon, Md., for use as a construction and demolition debris landfill, according to a report in the Baltimore Sun.

The council voted March 1 to approve a new solid waste management plan after adopting a series of amendments, one of which eliminated the plans for the former Spencer sand and gravel pit, which as been closed since 1992, according to the report.

The Baltimore Sun reports that some residents expressed concerns that reopening the landfill would increase traffic in the area and create air pollution. Council members told the paper that these concerns prompted them to decide against including the landfill in the waste management plan.
