Old marine foundations that once held the former Bay Bridge in San Francisco were successfully imploded over Labor Day weekend, a report by the San Francisco Chronicle says. The implosions were the first in a sequence of six.
Caltrans, the department that manages California’s highways and freeways, used a bubble curtain to minimize impact on the surrounding ecosystem during the underwater implosions, the report says. Future implosions can be rescheduled as needed if marine life get too close to the site.
According to the Caltrans website, piers E-7 and E-8 were demolished September 2 and were two of the 13 remaining foundations left. According to the report, demolition of the bridge began in September 2013 after the new structure was completed and open to traffic.
Caltrans’ website says the rest of the foundations will be imploded in a series of six weekends. The next implosions are scheduled to take place Sept. 16-18, then every other week until mid-November.
