The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality announced that it will be increasing its presence at construction and demolition landfills near New Orleans .
The state agency will have inspectors stationed daily at five disposal sites taking C&D debris in the New Orleans area. The locations where the inspectors will be located are the following: Industrial Pipe, Plaquemines Parish; Slidell Landfill, St. Tammany Parish; Highway 90, Jefferson Parish; Old Gentilly and Chef Menteur in Orleans Parish until June 14, according to DEQ Assistant Secretary Hal Leggett.
“This is going beyond what the department is required to do,” Leggett said. “However, with the large quantities of waste currently being disposed of at all of these sites we felt it was prudent to provide additional oversight resources. By having DEQ inspectors there, additional resources will be on-site to assist the facilities in assuring compliance in oversight of what is coming into the site and how the site operates.”
All C and D landfills have an operation plan that details how inspectors in towers and those on the surface of the disposal site will ensure only authorized waste is disposed of at the site. DEQ previously made twice-weekly inspections to make sure each facility was operating according to its plan.
