The City Council of Long Beach Calif., has delayed the approval of a proposed asphalt and concrete crushing facility in light of local opposition to the project, according to a report in the Long Beach Press Telegram (Long Beach, Calif.).
The council has requested a full environmental impact report on the project, which the Press Telegram reports will delay it by at least six months.
Hanson Aggregates, a division of London-based building materials company Hanson PLC, with a North American headquarters in Irving, Texas, proposed the project. If approved, the company will crush asphalt and concrete on the four-acre site near the Long Beach Airport for use in road base.
The Press Telegram reports that areas residents and several consultants have argued against the project, voicing concerns over dust, noise and increased traffic flow to the area, which is about 750 feet away from an elementary school.
