Loewendick wins Veterans Memorial bid

Central Ohio contractor will demolish aging war memorial to be replaced with museum.

S.G. Loewendick & Sons, Grove City, Ohio, has been announced as the winning bidder to take down a veterans memorial in Columbus, Ohio, that will be replaced with a new memorial and a museum.

According to a Columbus Dispatch report, commissioners in Franklin County, Ohio, are expected to approve the bid at their Tuesday, Dec. 2 meeting.

Loewendick’s bid of slightly less than $900,000 was considerably under the estimated $1.85 million the county expected to pay for the task, although it was not the lowest of the 12 bids received.

A bid from Homrich Demolition, Carleton, Michigan, came in slightly under $675,000. The commissioners, however, deemed the bid incomplete both in its project description and its estimated timeline.

A Franklin County employee quoted by the Dispatch said S.G. Loewendick & Sons’ proximity to the jobsite worked in its favor, as equipment and personnel would not have to travel far.

The demolition project is expected to produce some 500 to 700 tons of scrap steel, which will help S.G. Loewendick offset some of its costs.

The county commissioners are expected to set a 105-day deadline to complete the demolition so the site can be turned over promptly to the developer of the new war memorial and museum.
