Liberty Roll Off and Recycling, Brunswick, Georgia, was granted a three-month extension by the Brunswick City Commission to complete remaining stipulations attached to the approval of a conditional use permit before expanding its site, a report by Golden Isles News says.
According to the report, the facility stores construction material that cannot be processed until it’s shipped to a nearby 37-acre landfill. The company planned to expand its existing sorting facility, add staff parking and construct a 30 foot by 50 foot office building and concrete slab for a new sorting line, the report says. A fueling station with above-ground storage tank, vehicle washer area and vehicle maintenance building was also planned for construction. An area designated for future construction of a compost facility was also part of the plans.
Stipulations were drawn up in order for Liberty to continue with its plans due to residential concerns over odors and hazardous waste spreading beyond the facility site, the report says. They include the company being in compliance with the development concept plan from June 2016, increasing deodorizing cycles to evening hours and conducting a daily cleaning of the municipal solid waste transfer area.
By Jan. 1, the company was to complete an earth berm, dust control irrigation system and sorting line. The report says the municipal solid waste management building expansion was scheduled for completion on Aug. 1, 2017. Liberty missed its Jan. 1 deadline.
According to the report, the original deadline was missed due to setbacks from Hurricane Matthew and delayed permits from the Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division. The new deadline for the earth berm, dust control irrigation system and sorting line is May 3.
