Larsen Dirtworks crushes concrete with EvoQuip Cobra 230R

Mobile crusher used to crush 780 tons of concrete.

Larsen Dirtworks LLC, Foreston, Minnesota, specializes in concrete crushing, soil screening and land clearing services for construction projects that can necessitate processing thousands of tons of materials.

Mark Larsen, president of Larsen Dirtworks, and Rich Larsen, vice president of the company, use a Cat 908M loader, a Case 160B excavator, a Case 55B excavator with a hammer attachment and the EvoQuip Cobra 230R mobile impact crusher to handle these services.

The Larsen brothers say the Cobra has been especially important in handling high volumes. For instance, with one project in particular, Larsen Dirtworks used the Cobra to crush 780 tons of concrete curb and sidewalk plus a little asphalt for reuse as base material.

"We went down to Kentucky to EvoQuip's facility to demo this new Cobra 230R on-site mobile crusher," Rich Larsen says. "We knew this would be a perfect fit for [the job] we wanted to do."

The brothers used the Cobra during the sidewalk crushing job, which was a part of a larger effort to replace water and sewer lines in a seven-block area of Anoka, Minnesota. The crushed material was stored on a city lot provided for the project, and then reused when the streets were repaved.

"It saves on trucking costs, material disposal and having to rebuy the same material needed later on in the project," says Travis Neyssen, president of Kamke Construction, Foley, Minnesota, who was a subcontractor on the project. "It saves cost and time all across the board."

With a 43.7-feet transport length and 8-feet width, the Cobra can be used in various applications, such as crushing reinforced concrete, recycled asphalt, construction and demolition waste and natural rock. Its 33-inch by 34-inch rotor diameter gives it an output potential of 275 tons per hour, and its integrated afterscreen system ensures the required product specification is achieved. Oversize material is either stockpiled or recirculated back into the crusher.

Larsen acquired its Cobra from the Ruffridge-Johnson Equipment Company Inc., Centerville, Minnesota, which became part of EvoQuip's U.S. dealership network earlier this year.
