Komatsu America Corp., Vernon Hills, Ill., has announced that it will gradually introduce its Tier 3-compliant engines in advance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2006 deadline.
EPA Tier 3 regulations call for a 40 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) in off-road diesel engine emissions from construction equipment.
The new engines feature a Heavy-Duty High-Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel injection system for NOx and particulate matter reductions.
The Tier 3 engine is also equipped with an air-to-air charge air-cooling system, designed to lower the charge air temperature to inhibit NOx emissions.
Komatsu America Corp. is a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of Komatsu Ltd., a Tokyo, Japan-based manufacturer of construction equipment.
