Florida residents oppose concrete crushing facility expansion

Property owners near the North Jacksonville, Florida, facility are concerned with fly ash contamination.

Residents of a North Jacksonville, Florida, neighborhood are contesting a proposal for expansion of a nearby concrete recycling plant, a report by First Coast News says. The facility, Florida Roads, wants to increase its tonnage.

Residents surrounding the facility have cited noise and bright lights during night operations to Jacksonville City Council as issues in the past, but now locals are concerned with an increase of fly ash, the report says. The homes and facility are near a marsh and residents use water wells.

The company wants to expand its tonnage to 2,100 tons per day. The amount of construction and demolition debris generated by Duval County, Florida, is estimated at 601,052, the report says.

Ten properties owners in the area plan to speak with local government officials and press for air and water tests, the report says. The company has made concessions with the community in the past, the report says, but they did not include discussions for ground water contamination potential.
