The McHenry, Ill., county board approved, by a vote of 16-7 plans by Maple Valley Materials LLC for a conditional use permit for a gravel pit in Marengo, Ill.
While the company received approval for the gravel pit, three other sections of the proposal were rejected. The three were the request for a batch plant, a reclaiming operation and a concrete recycling facility.
Of the three aspects of the permit that were denied, the concrete recycling component was a much closer vote than the first two.
While three of the four requests failed to be approved, a source with the McHenry County Board said that at any time the company can reintroduce its request for a favorable ruling.
The approval came with a host of amendments, including restricting the operations of the pit to four fewer hours a week, and the requirement that the company would need an additional 25-foot setback at the site.
Under county ordinances, the conditional use permit carries a maximum of 10 years before the company has to reapply for an extension.
