Illinois Changes C&D Landfill Regulations

New law aimed to control illegal dumps now requires permits for all.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has signed a bill into law that aims to give the state more control over landfills, according to a report in the New Times (Munster, Ind.).

Among the provisions of the new law, is a requirement that all clean construction and demolition sites obtain permits, which previously could operate without a permit if they did not exceed grade level.

The new law also gives the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency increased authority to monitor and shut down dumps determined to pose a threat to public health, according to the report.
