Swedish retailer Ikea is demolishing a 365,000-square-foot parking garage adjacent to its store in Renton, Washington, in order to build a new 400,000-square-foot store with a company standard floor plan.
An Ikea spokesperson quoted in an article by the Puget Sound Business Journal says the current store is in a renovated aerospace parts warehouse that was converted to an Ikea store in 1994.
The new store, scheduled to open in the spring of 2017, will include a restaurant, a children’s play area and other amenities the retailer has introduced at its stores around the world. Ikea has 370 stores worldwide and 40 stores in the United States.
Ikea has chosen Bellevue, Washington-based Deacon Corp. as the general contractor and project manager at the Renton location.
