Humana Building Awarded Green Certification

Chicago office building gets LEED Silver rating.

Humana Inc., a provider of health benefits, has announced that its Chicago office has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in its Commercial Interiors category.

Humana’s Chicago office was designed to achieve LEED status for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable design strategies.

LEED certification for Humana was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These include:

  • Low-emission carpeting made from recycled content that can be easily replaced and recycled when worn
  • Regionally purchased construction materials and furnishings to minimize transportation-related pollution and fuel-costs
  • An office designed so that 75 percent of the space receives natural light
  • An active recycling program
