Neighbors greet Houston demolition with enthusiasm

Residents happy to see empty shopping center taken down.

Several residents of the Westbury neighborhood of Houston stopped by to express their support for the demolition of an abandoned shopping center, according to local media reports.

An article on the Houston Chronicle website quotes several Westbury residents expressing relief that the structure is being taken down and optimism about the fitness center that will take its place.

The mid-March 2015 demolition project entails demolishing what the Chronicle calls “the long-empty Westbury Centerette strip center in the heart of [the Westbury] neighborhood.”

The 3-acre site will be redeveloped to host an LA Fitness location and an accompanying parking garage, according to the online article. Among the contractors involved in the project is Houston-based Brazos Contractors.

Among those quoted supporting the demolition project is a member of two neighborhood civic groups and a mother who brought two small children to watch the beginning of the demolition, who commented, “This has been derelict a long time [and] it will be great to see some new business move in.”

The project is tied to an initiative Houston City Council District K called “Klean It Up/Green It Up.” The Westbury Centerette project marks the sixth demolition project tied to the initiative, according to the Chronicle.
