The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is nearing a decision regarding the fate of concrete used for nuclear containment vessels and in buildings where radioactive materials have been tested and used.
While the concrete in question would most likely have low if any level of radioactivity, some concrete industry groups have been pushing the NRC to not allow the demolished concrete back into the commercial stream, advocating burial as opposed to recycling.
The thinking from this point of view holds that even if the material is scientifically safe, there would be a stigma and potential liability attached to a recycled product in the marketplace derived from such facilities.
