Irving, Texas-based Heidelberg Materials North America has acquired the assets and quarry reserves of Island Aggregates, which is based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on Vancouver Island in western Canada.
Heidelberg NA says Island is one of the last remaining permitted aggregates sites on Vancouver Island. The transaction also includes three mobile crushing and recycling plants, loaders, excavators and related equipment.
Island Aggregates already had been acting as a long-term supplier of sand and gravel to Heidelberg’s ready-mixed concrete operations in the region.
“The addition of the Island Aggregates business further strengthens our existing integrated footprint in this important market and is the latest step in our pure-play growth strategy in North America,” says Oliver Patsch, president of the Northwest Region for Heidelberg Materials NA. “We are pleased to welcome the Island Aggregates employees and customers to Heidelberg Materials.”
Heidelberg says the acquisition is aligned with its focus on optimizing its portfolio in core markets and reflects what it calls an ambitious path toward accelerated growth and profitability. Heidelberg Materials NA is a business unit of Germany-based Heidelberg Materials AG.
The Island acquisition is the second in western Canada announced by Heidelberg this year. In June, the firm announced its acquisition of Concrete Crushers Inc., based in Calgary, Alberta. In 2024, Heidelberg NA announced its acquisition of aggregates recycling and production companies in Texas and Pennsylvania.
