The Dowling Co. office building in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii, has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification as a green building from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), according to a report in the Maui News (Maui, Hawaii).
The six-year-old office building of the Maui real estate company had been retrofitted to include more environmentally friendly green building features, including replacing the HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) system with a system that uses a non-CFC refrigerant, according to the report.
In addition, the original low-flush toilets were replaced with dual-use ultra low-flush units to save on water consumption.
The remodeling process also reduced the number of fluorescent light fixtures from 95 to 77.
