New stadium construction issues delay Georgia Dome demolition

July 30 demolition date may not go through due to issues with new stadium's retractable roof.

Demolition of the Georgia Dome in Atlanta could be delayed due to construction issues with its replacement, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says. The demolition was originally scheduled for July 30.

According to the report, the new complex’s retractable roof has caused construction issues in the past that continue today. The roof’s construction push back the completion target from March 1 to June 1, and then to July 30. It is unclear whether the roof will be completed and operable when the stadium opens.

The first event for the stadium is scheduled for July 30—an Atlanta United soccer match—followed by two more soccer matches in August and two Chick-Fil-A Kickoff college football games in early September. According to the report, dates for the Atlanta Falcons home games are expected to be announced in April 2017.

Gary Stokan, president and CEO of Peach Bowl Inc., the company that runs the Chick-fil-A Kickoff, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he was assured the Kickoff games would take place in the new stadium as scheduled.

Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff scheduled to play its national championship game in the new stadium on Jan. 8, says he hasn’t been told when the building will open but knows it will be open by game time and the Georgia Dome will also be demolished.

The parking and tailgating area planned for the Dome site, according to the report, will not be ready by January. The Georgia Dome officially closed on March 5. The artificial turf has since been removed and a security fence was placed around the site, but a spokesperson for the Georgia World Congress Center, which operated the Dome, says that it can be used until its demolished.
