McIntosh County in southern Georgia is restarting its curbside recycling program July 1, 2015, and has cancelled a monthly subscription charge that was added to the program several years ago.
According to a report on Jacksonville.com, the county is now “absorbing” a $3-per-month cost in an attempt to encourage more participation.
The McIntosh County manager is quoted as saying some 500 households have registered for the new, free service, whereas participation peaked at 350 households when there was a monthly charge.
The county also is cooperating with Keep McIntosh Beautiful to use “an aggressive advertising campaign” to help boost participation in the recycling program.
The program reintroduction reportedly resulted from a renegotiation deal with Waste Management Inc. and has as one of its goals extending the life of the only municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill in McIntosh County. A new construction and demolition (C&D) materials landfill also has been approved to help extend the life of the MSW landfill.
McIntosh County is situated on the Atlantic coast of Georgia approximately midway between Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida.
