Florida County Seeks C&D Landfill Control

Escambia County considers C&D landfill ordinance.

An ordinance has been introduced in Escambia County (Florida) that would give county officials more power to regulate construction and demolition debris landfills, according to a report in the Pensacola News Journal (Pensacola, Fla.).

The ordinance is a response to a problematic C&D landfill site at Saufley Field, which has been smoldering for more than two months, according to the report. Under current law, county officials have no jurisdiction over such sites.

The proposed ordinance would give county officials the power to control fencing, debris height, water and air quality testing and zoning issues, according to the report.

Officials are also considering a measure that would allow the county to permit sites or close them down.

Currently, the only agency with the power to shut a facility down is the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which is monitoring the site.

Landfill officials say the fires at the Saufley site should be under control by the Feb. 16 deadline, according to the report.
