Florida County Proposes Moratorium on C&D Landfills

Public hearing scheduled for Jan. 22.

Bay County (Florida) commissioners have approved a proposed moratorium against new construction and demolition debris landfills, according to a report from WJHG-TV, Panama City Beach, Fla.

According to the report, commissioners voted to approve the one year moratorium during the first public hearing held on the matter, although the county’s planning commission has rejected the new landfill ban twice.

Some board members say the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), which issues permits for C&D landfills, is too lenient with the regulations that govern the facilities. The board wants to come up with new regulations for the unlined landfills.

According to the report, the moratorium will not affect landfills currently in operation or those with permits that are not operating.

Commissioners will hold a final public hearing on the issue at the next scheduled meeting Jan. 22.
