Florida County Demands Changes for C&D Landfill

Florida state officials have given the owners of the Saufley Field landfill in Escambia County, Fla., 30 days to put out fires and develop a plan to better manage the construction and demolition debris there, according to a report in the Pensacola News Journal (Pensacola, Fla.).

Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and county officials met Jan. 5 to discuss problems with the C&D landfill, which have included fires burning occasionally for the last few months, according to the report.

State officials have recommended landfill operators keep the debris stored in the landfill at a more manageable height, with a drivable slope, to make controlling and extinguishing fires easier.
