Florida County Approves and Denies C&D Landfill Plans

DeSoto County Commissioners approve plans for one landfill and deny an application for a second site.

The DeSoto County (Florida) Commission has approved a development plan for a construction and demolition debris landfill submitted by Davis Waste & Recycling, but denied an application for a second site from the V.C. Hollingsworth family, according to reports in the Sun-Herald (Charlotte Harbor, Fla.).

The commissioners approved the plan from Davis Waste & Recycling, which proposed putting a C&D landfill on a 200-acre site adjacent to an existing landfill, according to the report.

However, the board denied a second special exemption, which is required before applying for state permits, by a 3-1 vote, the Sun-Herald reports.

According to the report, the V.C. Hollingsworth family had applied to build a landfill on a 134-acre plot across from the DeSoto County Landfill.

“I think this is the right idea but it’s the wrong location,” William Martin, planning commission member, tells the Sun-Herald.
