Southern Waste Systems was granted a permit by the Palm Beach County Commissioners, sitting as the Solid Waste Advisory Council, to operate a construction and demolition transfer station in Lantana, Fla. The location is in a industrial zoned part of the city. The commissioners approved the permit June 9.
One problem that has cropped up with the facility is that the back of the facility butts up against a residential section of another city – Lake Worth. According to local press reports this has generated some complaints from residents of Lake Worth, who say that the facility generates pests, noise, and odors.
Marc Bruner, the authority’s director of planning and environmental programs, said that the permit allows the facility to handle 3,000 cubic yards of construction and demolition waste a day. Also, under the permit the facility will be able to run from 7 am-5 pm.
"One of the challenges (the company) faced is, they (the authority) only meet every other month" to approve permits, Bruner said. "If it wasn't today, they would have to wait a little over two months."
While the facility is not yet operating, Bruner notes that the facility will begin taking in C&D material “any day now.” The approval of the six-month permit follows the county suspending the original permit to allow the company to obtain its occupancy permit.
