The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Florida Department of Management Services and Leon County are partnering to recycle old carpet and replace it with an environmentally friendly alternative in one of DEP’s office buildings.
During a recent renovation of a state building, nearly 5-1/2 tons of carpet was recovered and sent to Shaw Industries’ Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility in Augusta, Ga.
"When selecting new flooring for our building, it was important to select a material that was aligned with our strategic priority of environmental responsibility, but was still attractive, functional and within budget," said Mary Jean Yon, director of DEP’s Division of Waste Management.
The carpet was first taken to the Leon County Solid Waste Facility, where the company Paved Recycling Inc. processed the material. The carpet was then separated and sent to the Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility.
The Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility is the only post-consumer, cradle-to-cradle, closed loop, nylon 6 recovery facility of its kind in the world. The material is used in carpet products again
The carpet tile used to replace the old carpet contains more than 30 percent recycled content and is 100 percent sustainable.
