Flint Hills Resources, an independent refining, chemicals, and biofuels and ingredients and owner of one of the country’s largest asphalt production facilities, based in Wichita, Kansas, has reportedly acquired an asphalt shingle-recycling facility in Shakopee, Minnesota, previously owned by Recovery Technology Solutions (RTS).
A report in the Shakopee Valley News states the facility has been closed since January. RTS reportedly developed a technique for recycling asphalt shingles and reusing the liquid asphalt, mineral aggregates and other materials for the shingle and asphalt pavement industries. The article also notes the facility has the capability of recycling 70,000 tons of shingles per year.
RTS developed innovative technologies for recycling asphalt shingles and reusing liquid asphalt, mineral aggregates, and other essential materials for the shingle manufacturing and asphalt pavement industries. The facility has the potential to recycle up to 70,000 tons of shingles each year.
Charles Boan, marketing manager for Flint Hills Resources’ asphalt business is quoted in the article as saying, “As a company we are constantly exploring innovative ways to create value for our customers. We are excited about the opportunity to build on what RTS has started and produce high-quality and cost-competitive asphalt and other products from recycled materials, which also has the added benefit of significantly reducing landfill waste.”
Flint Hills says it will spend the next few months improving the Shakopee facilities’ technology and manufacturing processes before resuming full-scale operations.
