The new Asphalt Pavement Principles online video series from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), developed with the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), features engineers, academics, and other industry figures discussing best practices for pavement performance.
The three videos in the series, viewable on the FHWA YouTube channel, are:
- Asphalt Pavement Principles: Density and Durability
- Asphalt Pavement Principles: Smoothness
- Asphalt Pavement Principles: Long-Life Pavements
“More than 18 billion tons of asphalt pavement mixture is in place on U.S. roads, and more than 375 million tons of new asphalt pavement mixture is placed annually as part of pavement construction, maintenance, preservation and rehabilitation activities,” Richard Willis, VP for engineering, research and technology at NAPA, says. “As these videos show, long-lasting, high-performing asphalt pavements are the result of collaborative partnerships between researchers, manufacturers, paving contractors and agencies.”
“These videos help agencies and paving contractors alike better understand how to design and build asphalt pavements in a way that improves pavement performance and service life,” NAPA 2019 Chairman John Harper, who is also senior vice president at Construction Partners Inc. in Dothan, Alabama, says. “Attention to best practices and applying innovative technologies and materials are an important part of ensuring the traveling public gets the highest level of performance that asphalt pavements can deliver.”
