Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L), a Kansas City, Mo.-based power company, has been honored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its participation in an asphalt recycling project, according to a report in the Sun-News (Northland, Mo.).
KCP&L, Lafarge Corp. and the University of Missouri Kansas City participated in a project demonstrating the viability of full-depth, in-place, cold recycling of asphalt, according to the report. Nearly two miles of existing asphalt roads and base materials were ground up, mixed with 1,700 tons of coal ash and compacted into new paving material. An EPA spokesman tells the Sun-News that the technique reduced the cost of road repairs by 33 percent, saving on the cost of hauling away the old pavement.
KCP&L contributed the coal ash to the project, according to the report.
